About

Located on the traditional lands of the Boonwurrung/Bunurong people, BlueScope has been operating a painted, coated and uncoated steel processing facility at Hastings, on the shores of Western Port Bay, for over half a century.

BlueScope has achieved ResponsibleSteel™ site certification for Western Port. The certification reflects the outstanding efforts of our Western Port team, the quality of our operations, and provides our customers, shareholders, and communities with the confidence that BlueScope’s Western Port Works meets the very high environmental, social and governance performance standards required by ResponsibleSteel™ site certification. BlueScope’s Western Port site has evolved from two earlier company trading names including John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd and Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, Steel Division.

In fact, we celebrated our 50th birthday in our local community on 3 November 2022. It gave us an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to 50 years of great people working in the local steel industry, providing quality steel products to Australian customers and jobs for local people.

While we are the largest private employer on the Mornington Peninsula, the Western Port facility is part of Bluescope's global steel manufacturing community. Fifteen thousand people are employed across Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands, Thailand, Vietnam, China and in North America.

The steel products we make for the building and construction markets, manufacturing, transport agricultural and mining industries are 100 per cent recyclable. We are also working to make the way we manufacture steel sustainable by lowering emissions. Read more about BlueScope’s climate action and sustainability targets here.
