Tell us about yourself!
I’m Josie Jones, a dedicated community advocate, environmental leader, and creative professional with a deep love for the Mornington Peninsula. For over 14 years, I’ve volunteered my time to protect and preserve our coastline, focusing on litter prevention and promoting marine biodiversity. My work has led to significant improvements in beach management practices, including the creation of the Beach Hand Bin project, which recently earned me the prestigious Australian Good Design Award. Through my community events and advocacy, I successfully introduced the single-use plastics policy with council, paving the way for more sustainable practices. I’m also proud to have stopped the use of mechanical beach raking after proving that it was not only ineffective but also harmful, as it broke plastics into smaller fragments that further polluted our shores. With a career spanning 25 years in graphic design and creative direction, I’ve combined my professional expertise with my passion for environmental stewardship. My efforts have been recognized through numerous awards, including an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2022, Australian of The year Local hero in 2020, Citizen of the year in 2019, along with a multitude of other awards. I’m running for the Nepean Ward to bring a fresh perspective to council, focusing on youth empowerment, employment opportunities, and community advocacy. Together, we can create a community where everyone is connected and inspired to contribute to our shared future.
