Industry Roundtable with Jess Wilson & Sam Groth

CFMP Members joined the Deputy Liberal Leader and Member for Nepean, Sam Groth, and the Shadow Minister for Education and Industry and Economic Growth, Jess Wilson; for a roundtable discussion at The National in Cape Schanck.

The Committee outlined its position on a number of key priority pillars, including:

  • The ongoing and critical need to rezone surplus port land in and around Hastings to support jobs. Rezoning of surplus port land is crucial to meet the growing demand of general industrial use and development within Mornington Peninsula Shire.
  • Our support for the proposed Victorian Renewable Energy Terminal (VRET) at the Port of Hastings. The VRET is crucial in the assembly of offshore wind components and will support the Gippsland Offshore Wind Zone given its strategic location close to Gippsland and Melbourne.
  • A discussion around the tax imposition on business on the Mornington Peninsula, including payroll tax, land tax, stamp duty and the short-stay levy.
  • The drastic need to redevelop Rosebud Hospital for the southern peninsula community.
  • The severe lack of public transport and connectivity issues which hinders economic growth, tourism, education and health outcomes, and compounds workforce issues.

Both Shadow Ministers then took questions from our membership, covering a wide array of topics, including:

  • Recycled water on the Mornington Peninsula and its potential to support a thriving agricultural sector
  • Land tax impositions and its impact on confidence, among other state government tax issues
  • Education pathways and connectivity issues
  • Further support required for tourism opportunities
  • Housing supply, building issues, and planning matters
  • Crisis housing on the Mornington Peninsula
  • Barriers to growing employment
  • Metro v regional classification

The Committee would like to thank Jess Wilson for making their time to speak to us today, and share some of the Opposition's economic platform with us ahead of next year's State election.
